About Aparna

Aparna Sahgal is a contemporary artist with a keen eye for beauty. Having lived her formative years in Africa and most of her adult life in Europe and North America, she travels back home to India in her art while honoring her immigrant experience. It's an artistic excavation that links her past to the present, and classic to exploratory. Aparna does this by infusing contemporary lines and shapes with a traditional feel. She believes an artist doesn’t have to be tied down to one medium and while she found her true love when she had her fingers dripping in paint and exploring colors, shapes and textures, she also loves to keep pushing her creative boundaries by mixing mediums and capturing the world through photography. In 2009, she launched Aparna Sahgal Photography, to create meaningful art through the lens and capture the warmth and vibrance of cherished moments.

Aparna has been fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful women role models. As a result, she finds herself delving deeper into the paradox of being a woman. Strong and powerful, yet treated as subordinate. In her art she explores the manifestations of the divine feminine, the goddess Shakti; every curve is sensual and delicate, but with an inner core of power. She aims to capture this contradiction of beauty and majesty in her art. For her, this is best expressed through bold, energetic lines and vivid colors that are a celebration of simple emotions, interwoven to form complex bonds. Her mastery of color theory is apparent in her confident approach to choosing her innovative and complex palette for her works.

While many of her techniques were mastered over years of experimentation, her art training background includes the prestigious Chelsea College of Arts, London, UK and New York University. Aparna has had several successful solo and group shows across the world. Her portfolio includes shows at the The Nehru Centre Gallery in London, U.K, Gallery Gabrichidze in Brussels, Belgium, The Halo Heritage Art Gallery, Kolkata, India, Soho Photo Gallery in New York City (NY), Art House Gallery in Atlanta (GA) and Art And Shelter Gallery in Los Angeles (CA). Her art is found in many private collections across the world and several public collections including top hotel chains. She has also created many commissioned works of art. In her current adventure, she is happily settled in Connecticut with her husband and two children. Her art and journey can be followed at instagram.com/aparnasahgal.
