My Definition of Leadership
I talk about leadership a lot, especially in the context of what it means to be a powerful woman facing the complexities of our ever-changing reality. But my definition of leadership may be a bit different to the norm, and I'd like to share more about my perspective.
Leadership to me means playing a leadership role in your life -- personally, professionally, holistically. Leadership means being clear about your values and empowering them to drive your decision-making and your actions. Leadership means showing up in your community authentically and with the skills and confidence to voice your truth. Leadership also means finding the courage to listen actively to others in the search for clarity and understanding.
When I invite women to participate in my leadership development courses, I hear this too often:
'I'm not a leader because I don't directly manage anyone at work.'
But we need to start thinking about leadership as something greater than traditional professional hierarchies and political establishments. We need to find ways for each of us to take ownership of our true leadership potential as we seek new pathways to gain greater agency over our future. And more than ever, we need to support one another in our efforts to do this.
If you're reading this, you're probably someone who has in some way helped me build this tremendous community of women leaders we call Tide Risers. I'd like to thank you for being a part of this critical work of helping women find and express our authentic, holistic leadership potential. The world needs strong women leaders now more than ever.
